It would be difficult to describe Dr. Xhoikia in few words or describe his profession by few terms. He is an an academic; an intellectual, a filmmaker, a nuclear physicist, an author, play writer, story writer, dramatist and so on.
Dr. Xhoikia was born in Nogau, Assam on 20 February-1932. He cleared his matriculation and Intermediate exams in 1948 & 1950 respectively. Xhoikia then joined Cotton College, Gauhati University and completed his bachelor of science with honors in Physics in 1952. He has gotten his masters degree in physics from prestigious Presidency College of Calcutta University. Then he moved to United Kingdom and earned his PhD degree in Nuclear Physics from the University of London in 1961.
Later he joined Gauhati University as a faculty member in the physics department.
He is acknowledged as one among the highest ranking authors of Assam. Many stories written by him has been translated into English and different Indian languages such as Bengali, Hindi, Malayalam, Marathi etc.
Dr. Xhoikia was the founder editor of Assamese bi- monthly magazine “Prantik”.
Prantik is one among the highest rated magazine of Assamese literature where any or all kinds of topics are discussed. His editorial writing in Prantik “Sesh Pristha” (Pronounced: Xhexh Pristhaa) (Eng. The Last Page) was widely read and later the collection of this was published as a book and became a best seller. He edited a children’s magazine “Xhophoora” as well.
Dr. Bhabendra Nath Saikia (Bhobendro Nath Xhoikia) has a plethora of literary awards including Sahitya Academy Award (literary honor in India) for the year 1976. Furthermore, he is also the recipient of the Padma Shri Award (Padmashree) 2001, the fourth highest civilian award in the Republic of India. Received Assam Publication Board award (1973), Assam valley Literary award(1990),Srimanta Sankardeva Award (1998).
Dr. Bhobendo Nath Xhoikia is well-known as a movie maker. He had directed a total of 8 movies, 7 out of which in Assamese language and one in Hindi language. All his 7 Assamese movies won National Film Award , Rajat Kamal (The Golden Lotus) award which is a record of its kind.
One famous quote of Dr. Bhabendra Nath Xhoikia – “I cannot make movies which are contrary to practicality. I have never made such films, nor I would make in future. My cinema/movies illustrates factual aspects of human life, with possible artistic inputs from me, both as a writer and movie-maker.”
Most of his movies has been screened in various International Film Festivals across the globe such as – Cannes Film Festival- Franch, Valladolid-Spain, Montreal and Toronto- Canada, Karlovy Vary – Czechoslovakia, Nantes-France, Munich-Germany, Algiers-Algeria, Sydney-Australia etc. a few to mention excluding various film festivals in India. His first directorial debut movie Sandhya Raag (Xhondya Raag) (Eng. The Evening Melody ) got the National Film Award – Rajat Kamal, and is the first Assamese movie to be screened at Indian Penorama.

Most of his movies were based on stories written by himself. He was the main play-writer for “Abahon Mobile Theater Group”. There he met a lot of theater artists and got a chance to observe their life from very near which motivated him to write the story of Aborton
. He wrote number of plays, Romyobhumi, Jonmobhumi, Gohbor, Dinobondhu, Oronyot Godhuli a few to be named.
He held many senior leadearship positons of various organizations such as- Chairman, Assam State Film (Finance and Development) Corporation Ltd., Member of Sangeet Natak Akademi, member of Indian National Council for co-operation with UNESCO, President of Jyoti Chitraban (Film Studio) Society, Guwahati, Assam etc.
Dr. Xhoikia, established “Bhabendra Nath Saikia
Children Welfare Trust” in 2001. He started Aarohan- a distinctive venture, the first of its kind in the North-East India- a center devoted to the all-round growth of kids by means of noble concepts and programs. Aarohan’s mission is to offer children by way of education, motivation and direction in a fostering atmosphere that will give power to them to rise ahead of their conditions. (Aarohan)
Dr. Saikia died on 13th August, 2003 in Guwahati, Assam, India. The State Government of Assam has named a road in Guwahati and a state award in his tribute.
He was popularly known as “Saikia Sir” (Xhoikia Sir) among all.
