Jones Moholia (Jones Mahalia) (Assamese: জনচ মহলিয়া) was born on November 1, 1946 at Diplonga village near Sootea in Sonitpur district of Assam, India. Bhuyan Moholiya and Numoli Moholiya were his parents. Jones completed his matriculation exam in 1964 from the Sootea High School. He did his graduation from Arya Vidyapith College, Guwahati under Gauhati University, Assam. He gotten his diploma in film direction from the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, India in 1971.
He served in different positions in the Films Division under the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. Later he resigned from the job and started his career as director.
Duronir Rong, was his first film as director and producer. Dooronir Rong established him as an acclaimed director.

Jones made nine departmental documentaries when he was working for the Film Division. He directed and produced a few series/serials in Assamese language too, such as “Protighat” (for Doordarshan, Guwahati), “Anek Phoolor”, “Surobhi”, “Surangar Majere”, “Operation Drugs”, “Kaalratna”, “Ghat Protighat”, “Dasami”, ‘Jibon Joonak’, “Dance Parade” and “Rhythm Time”.
Diplonga Gaau (village), where he was borne and brought up was near to a tea estate where the tea estate management used to show movies free of cost to its workers. Jones used to go to see those movies and fascinated by the movies. His love for films grew from there and whenever he can he will watch a movie there and will never miss an opportunity to watch those free movies. After graduation he gave written test to enter FTII, Pune and got selected. His final year documentary at FTII, “Save Their Soul” was selected in Tehran Film Festival.
Bollywood actor Jaya Bachhan, Danny Dengjongpa, Raja Murad, Kiran Kumar were Jones’s class / batch mates at FTII, Pune.
He married Rita Mahalia on 14th May 1973, who is an actress. His daughter, Jinny Mahalia is a choreographer and son Jerry Mahalia, is a music director.
Jones Moholia breathed last on 4th February 2016, in Hayat Hospital, Guwahati, Assam at the age of 69.
